Keep the hard question
Robert Chung's first programming lesson came from an old Visual Basic book his father had kept. At U of T Scarborough, that early curiosity grew into mathematics, computer science and competitive programming that took him to the International Collegiate Programming Contest World Finals.
The important detail is the continuity. The tools changed, but the pleasure of tracing a problem until it opened stayed intact. A beginner's curiosity became a durable way to choose what deserved another hour.
The people
Let good teachers make difficulty inviting
The academic record is only part of the story. Chung points to teachers who made hard work inviting, especially the ungraded problems that led to a teaching assistant role. The freedom to stay with a question became more valuable than a rigid study routine.
That environment changes the meaning of effort. When an exercise is allowed to be exploratory, a wrong turn becomes information and a difficult room becomes a place to return to.
The next move
Carry the method into new rooms
By convocation, he had already started a quantitative trading internship in New York City. The through line is simple: difficult questions became a source of direction when the people around him treated them as invitations rather than tests.
For alumni, that is a portable model. Keep one question that is not immediately useful, find people who enjoy working through it and let the next field reveal what the old habit was preparing you to notice.
