The context
Where the work begins
After a decade in education, Krystal Brant enrolled in U of T's Indigenous Trauma and Resilience social work program to develop counselling skills. She had expected to return to teaching. Instead, her studies and work in addiction treatment led her to Niagara Health, where she became an Indigenous Relations Specialist.
The takeaway
What follows
Brant educates employees about Indigenous history, healing traditions and intergenerational trauma. Her work includes helping staff explain available supports and facilitate traditional ceremonies and medicines in hospitals. She completed her master's degree in 2025 while working, raising five children and serving as president of the Ontario Native Women's Association. She credits her Indigenous colleagues and university support network with sustaining her.
