The context
Where the work begins
Vanessa Lin first encountered ischemic preconditioning as a volunteer in another student's exercise study. The method briefly interrupts blood flow before exertion. For her own master's research, she applied blood pressure cuffs to trained rowers' legs before a two-kilometre indoor rowing test to examine whether the treatment improved performance.
The takeaway
What follows
The question was personal. Lin rowed with the Varsity Blues from 2022 to 2024, fitting early practices around classes and work. After graduating in June, she planned to keep collecting study data with supervisor Ira Jacobs. She also coaches strength training and Olympic weightlifting while competing in weightlifting herself. The research remains unfinished.
