Dr. Mary Ann Mavrinac, MLS’84, has been named the 2026 winner of the FIMS Alumni Award of Excellence by Western’s Faculty of Information and Media Studies. She is dean emeritus of the University of Rochester Libraries, where she was Vice Provost and Dean until 2022.

Before Rochester she was Chief Librarian at the University of Toronto Mississauga from 2001 to 2012, and earlier she headed Western’s D.B. Weldon Library from 1999 to 2001. Her Western ties go back to 1983, when she began her Master of Library Science.

A committee of FIMS students, faculty, staff and alumni chose her from a competitive pool. Her work centres on libraries as places, including Rochester’s Evans Lam Square and Barbara J. Burger iZone, the Hazel McCallion Academic Learning Centre in Mississauga, and a $500,000 redesign of the children’s department at the Teck Centennial Public Library in Kirkland Lake. She has led both the Association of Research Libraries and the Ontario Library Association as president.
