The Western Mustangs Open Ultimate team won the 2026 Canadian Eastern University Ultimate Championships Open Division title in Belleville, Ont., beating Ottawa 9-8 in the final on universe point, ultimate’s version of sudden-death overtime. The win gave Western an automatic Division 1 berth at the Canadian University Ultimate Championships.

The Mustangs finished 6-1 for the weekend. They beat Toronto 11-10 on universe point, lost only to McGill 15-9, then beat McGill 12-10 in a rematch on Sunday and Queen’s 10-5 to reach the final. Against Ottawa, Western trailed 3-1, 5-3 and 6-4, tied at 3-3 and 8-8, and forced a turnover to start the deciding point.

Captain Chance Langdon said the offence was hard to stop when it stayed calm and patient. Captain Kiran Grieve said the defence was huge, since forcing break points took pressure off the offence.
