Michael Faulds, in his first season as Western’s football head coach, made it clear after the 78-7 win over York that many hands will carry the Mustangs. Eight different players caught at least one pass, seven ran the ball, and the team jumped from sixth to third in the national rankings after one game. Receiver Nik Shewchuk, who had 139 yards and two touchdowns on five catches, said the team’s motto is everybody eats.

Quarterback Jerome Rancourt and Ben Casselman both played well, and running back Ethan Dolby had 10 carries for 97 yards. Emmett Charles, a 6-foot-4 receiver, and slotbacks Brennan Keba and Dasani McIntosh also made plays. Faulds said the team had 10 first-time starters in the game.

The Mustangs were due at Windsor the following Saturday at 1 p.m. Faulds said he has players run after each game for every penalty, a rule meant to keep the team disciplined, and that the club is built to share the ball.
