A Handover Between Generations of Nurses

Nurse and author Tilda Shalof met nursing student Lisa Mochrie, a longtime fan of her books, at a 2020 conference just before COVID-19 shutdowns began. The pair have now published The Handover – A Nurse's Last Shift, addressing burnout, racism and retention.

Mochrie had been reading Shalof's books on nursing since she was 16. When the two met at a national nursing conference in 2020, the mentorship that followed grew into a shared book project bridging a veteran's career and a newcomer's.

The Handover – A Nurse's Last Shift, published by University of Toronto Press, takes its title from the moment one nurse hands a shift to the next, and includes exchanges between the two about academics, the NCLEX licensing exam and difficult patients.

Shalof dedicated the book to nurses who choose to stay in the profession. “Being a healthy and happy nurse is still possible,” she writes — a message she hopes reaches the generation Mochrie represents.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

Sixty-nine stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
