From software to Singapore counsel

After the dot-com crash, software developer Mark Tan went to law school out of curiosity. He is now general counsel and country head in Singapore for a global logistics real estate firm, and supports bursaries and scholarships at the Jackman Faculty of Law.

Mark Tan (JD ’06) was building a software career when the dot-com crash reshaped the job market in the early 2000s. He was the first in his family to pursue law, and he says it began with curiosity about a new field.

Two decades later he has worked in Canada, New York, Australia and Singapore. He is now general counsel and country head, based in Singapore, for a global logistics real estate investor, developer and operator, a role that draws on his earlier technical career.

Tan supports bursaries and scholarship programs at the Henry N.R. Jackman Faculty of Law. He says what stuck with him was how open and embracing the law school was.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

One hundred and thirteen stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
