Dietitians who count carbon

Anneke Hobson and Renita Lam, who met in the Master of Public Health nutrition and dietetics program, founded Dietitians for Climate Action. A class project on sustainable diets led to a Toronto Public Health report on healthy, low-carbon eating.

Anneke Hobson and Renita Lam (MPH, 2017) founded Dietitians for Climate Action to help fellow dietitians link healthy eating with a healthy planet. They learned the connection while completing the Master of Public Health in Nutrition and Dietetics at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Their path began with a group project on sustainable diets set by Assistant Professor Eric Ng. During her practicum at Toronto Public Health, Hobson co-authored Diets for a Cool Planet: Healthy, Sustainable Diets for Toronto, which found Ontarians do not eat enough fruit and vegetables and that Canadians on average eat more meat than they need.

The story notes that one third of all human-caused greenhouse gas emissions come from food.

Reported from Dietitians for Climate Action: DLSPH alumni fight climate change through food (Dalla Lana School of Public Health news, August 10, 2026).

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

One hundred and thirteen stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
