The Alumni Who Keep Showing Up

For National Volunteer Week, Bloomberg Nursing thanked the alumni who return as preceptors, mentors and instructors: Carla Coverdale (MN 2011) writes Words of Wisdom notes for students; Alex Harris mentors through the Alumni-Graduate Student Mentorship program; Carrie Kan and Brock Cooper precept future nurse practitioners.

Long before they graduated, these nurses were shaped by preceptors, instructors and alumni who gave their time. Carla Coverdale (MN 2011) has volunteered with the Faculty for years, specializing in clinical training, and now writes notes for the Words of Wisdom Campaign — formerly called Golden Notes.

Alex Harris (MN, MHSc 2013, PhD 2018) mentors through the Faculty's Alumni-Graduate Student Mentorship program. “I can honestly say that being a mentor has been a gift,” Harris says. Carrie Kan (MN 2014), an emergency-medicine Nurse Practitioner, precepts in a specialty in high demand for training placements.

Brock Cooper (MN 2010) has volunteered since his own student days — building an online module on adult depression, taking part in NP Residency Weeks and sitting on the NP admissions committee. Dean Robyn Stremler thanked the volunteers for the hours they give back to Bloomberg Nursing.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

Sixty-nine stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
