A Jean Monnet Chair for Toronto

Robert Austin has been awarded a three-year Jean Monnet Chair by the European Commission to study rule of law and EU enlargement. It will fund for-credit workshops, student traineeships and a European Union Lecture Series, and an international workshop is planned for Toronto in spring 2029.

Robert Austin, a professor at the Munk School and Associate Director of the Centre for European and Eurasian Studies, has been awarded a Jean Monnet Chair by the European Commission through the Erasmus+ programme. The three-year award supports a new initiative on rule of law and transitional justice in the context of European Union enlargement.

Students in the European Affairs undergraduate program and the MA in European and Eurasian Studies will be able to take intensive, for-credit workshops led by visiting European academics, and selected students will get funded research traineeships. Partners include the University of Regensburg and the University of Graz.

The chair will also launch a European Union Lecture Series with public events, and an international workshop is planned for Toronto in Spring 2029. Austin calls the award one of the highlights of his career.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

One hundred and thirteen stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
