Three flags, one Blues team

Alumna Kylie Masse became the most decorated Canadian swimmer in Commonwealth Games history, adding a gold and a silver to reach 11 career medals. Current Varsity Blues swimmers and two alumnae runners also raced in Scotland, under the flags of three countries.

University of Toronto athletes and alumni competed at the Commonwealth Games in Scotland under three different flags. Kylie Masse, a U of T alumna and five-time Olympic medallist, won gold in the 50-metre backstroke and silver in the 100-metre backstroke, which took her career total to 11 medals.

Four current Varsity Blues swimmers joined her in Glasgow. Ben Loewen placed sixth in the 200-metre butterfly, and Ben Winterborn helped Canada finish fourth in the men’s 4x100-metre medley relay. Elijah Daley made his Games debut for Bermuda, and Connor Macdonald carried the flag for the Cayman Islands at the opening ceremony.

On the track, alumnae sisters Lucia Stafford and Gabriela DeBues-Stafford both raced for Canada. Lucia placed fourth in the women’s mile final, and Gabriela finished 14th in the women’s 5,000 metres with a season-best time.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

One hundred and thirteen stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
