Unmaking the Undercommons

After eight years in OISE's flex-time PhD program, Neil Price completed an autoethnographic dissertation on Black collectivity in the academy in December 2025. He continues to lead the consultancy LogicalOutcomes and has been invited to develop a new U of T Urban Studies course.

Neil Price spent years straddling community practice and academia, including work at Pathways to Education and the Boys and Girls Club, drawing on a Caribbean background steeped in oral tradition, the Black Radical Tradition and Black feminist theory. Over eight years in OISE's flex-time PhD in Adult Education and Community Development, supervised by Professor Jamie Magnusson, he wrote an autoethnographic dissertation — Surfacing the Undercommons: Unmaking the Academy through Black Collectivity — completed in December 2025.

He has been invited to develop a course in U of T's Urban Studies program, in the Department of Geography and Planning, growing out of a SSHRC-funded project on community innovation during and after COVID-19.

Price co-founded the nonprofit consultancy LogicalOutcomes with Dr. Gillian Kerr in 2014 and continues to lead it. As he puts it, "Keep yourself open to where ideas can emerge. They can come from anywhere."

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

Sixty-nine stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
