Mathematics for uncertain worlds

Peyman Mohajerin Esfahani joined U of T in 2025 from Delft University of Technology. His research builds tools for controlling robots, spotting failures in industrial processes and managing smart energy systems, and he teaches students that mathematics is a way to solve real problems.

Peyman Mohajerin Esfahani is a faculty member in mechanical and industrial engineering, cross-appointed with electrical and computer engineering. He joined U of T in 2025 from Delft University of Technology and brings over a decade of experience researching decision-making in uncertain and dynamic environments.

His research develops mathematical and computational tools for controlling systems. Applications include planning robot motion, detecting anomalies in industrial processes before they lead to failures, and improving smart energy systems such as smart charging of electric vehicles. The same ideas help organizations with supply chains and resource allocation.

He says he has liked solving puzzles since he was a kid, and that mathematics gave him the same excitement. In class, he says, it is rewarding to see students develop their own way of thinking.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

One hundred and thirteen stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
