The Yeses That Built a CFO

Living on her own at 16 and working nearly full-time through night school, Heather Stark came to U of T on a scholarship. She went on to become public-company CFO at Weight Watchers International, managing $1.5 billion in debt, and now leads finance at The Fertility Partners.

Stark studied Canadian Studies and Commerce at University College, moving to Oakville for a job at PricewaterhouseCoopers and taking courses at UTM before graduating from St. George. She placed 11th on the UFE exam.

She later said yes to becoming public-company CFO at Weight Watchers International during a major transformation, managing $1.5 billion in debt. She is now Chief Financial Officer of The Fertility Partners, with an eye toward a future CEO role and board service.

Stark still carries her grandfather's advice — “Respect everyone. Stay curious” — and has family dinner every night with her husband and four kids. “The yeses built me – not the certainty,” she says.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

Sixty-nine stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
