Finding Her Footing in Sustainability

A difficult, mostly-online first two years left Hargun Rekhi short of a psychology major — until a summer at the Koffler Scientific Reserve gave her lifelong friends and a jump in her grades. She went on to lead sustainability work as UC Lit's Sustainability Commissioner, organizing the campus's first inter-college sustainability conference. "There was a massive jump in my grades because I felt connected to the work," she says.

Rekhi graduated in June 2025 with a major in Environmental Science and minors in Psychology and Environment and Behaviour. The turning point was living at Harkaway Cottage with eight other students during a summer Research Excursions Program at the Koffler Scientific Reserve; she later joined FREED, an access-based program for BIPOC researchers at the Algonquin Wildlife Research Station, where she is now a student ambassador.

As Sustainability Commissioner for the UC Literary and Athletics Society and a work-study student on the President's Advisory Committee on the Environment, Climate Change, and Sustainability, she organized the first inter-college sustainability conference on the St. George campus and led a waste audit at UC's Whitney Hall Residence, presented to the March 2025 College Council — work that fed into U of T's back-to-back #1 Global Sustainability Ranking. She was also active in the Hart House Debate Club, judging novice finals at the 2025 North American debating championships in Kingston.

She's now a master's student in environmental studies at York University, focusing on Indigenous sovereignty and community consultation — building, in a new field, on the sense of connection that turned her college years around.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

Sixty-nine stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
