Redefining Development, One Internship at a Time

Among the first graduates of U of T's Minor in Global Leadership, Ivoire Beguinot interned at the World Bank in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire, supporting the country's Climate and Development Report before local delegates pushed back on Western development frameworks.

Born in Senegal and raised across Algeria, New Caledonia, France, Morocco and Côte d'Ivoire, Beguinot paired the new Minor in Global Leadership, launched in 2023, with a major in international development studies at U of T Scarborough.

Her World Bank internship in Abidjan had her working with ministries, local institutions and private-sector actors including the Conseil du Café-Cacao. She also served as director of the Global Leadership Student Association and co-chaired UTSC's International Development Conference.

Beguinot plans a master's degree next, exploring policymaking and further internships. “I want to help redefine what meaningful, responsible development looks like in practice,” she says.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

Sixty-nine stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
