A Lemur Named Kely

On a fieldwork placement at Madagascar's Sunrise Centre, Kristen Tsai arrived each morning by tuk-tuk to help children with disabilities build handwriting skills. Unable to stop thinking about them once home, she wrote Let's Be Nosy in Nosy Be!, a children's book starring a young lemur who visits the school. "More than anything, I wanted to capture the spirit of the kids themselves," she says.

The Sunrise Centre is a first-of-its-kind school in Nosy Be for children with physical and intellectual disabilities, and it relies entirely on donations. Each morning, Tsai was greeted with "good morning" in Malagasy on her tuk-tuk ride in.

Stephanie Ellis, a U of T occupational therapy alum, has volunteered with the school since its founding about four years ago and helped set up the placements, coordinated by Professor Andrea Duncan's international fieldwork program. OT students on the placement helped teachers put donated equipment to use for students with cerebral palsy.

Published last year, the book sends 100 per cent of its proceeds to the Sunrise Centre. Tsai has stayed in touch with the school's founder, Nathan, since her placement ended.

Until the next issue

The class keeps arriving.

Sixty-nine stories end this issue, but the university doesn't pause between them. A new orientation week is already being planned; a lab somewhere on campus is already running the next experiment. Alumni Digest will be there in October for the next one.
