A Fields Medal turns a theorem into a gathering
Jacob Tsimerman’s award gives the wider university a reason to watch, ask questions and see mathematics as a public event.
Jacob Tsimerman’s Fields Medal is an individual distinction, but the U of T story around it is collective. Students, colleagues and younger mathematicians gathered around a result that can take years to explain and a lifetime to reach.
The award changes the atmosphere around a subject. For one afternoon, an abstract problem becomes a campus invitation: come closer, listen carefully and imagine what difficult work might make possible.
