A chance becomes a life in the lab

Joel Tan’s story follows the teachers, family and institution that helped a first opportunity become a research career.

Joel Tan remembers the people who made research feel possible before he had a clear plan for it. Family, teachers and a university opportunity created the conditions for a student to see himself as someone who could contribute.

The story’s force is cumulative. A life changes through a series of people who say yes early enough—and through the later decision to become that person for someone else.
