The summer lab goes to Mars

UBC engineering physics students build autonomous robots for a simulated habitat.

The summer lab goes to Mars
IdeasA competition in the Hebb Building becomes a compact lesson in applied learning. Sixteen teams spend the summer turning hand tools, code and physics into machines that can interact with a staged planetary environment. The important part is not the fantasy of Mars alone. It is the transfer of practical confidence into the fields that come next.Photo: UBC Applied Science

Where the work begins

UBC says the gift is the largest ever made to a Canadian school of nursing. In recognition, the school and its future home will carry the MacIsaac name when the change launches in early fall.

In the field

The stated use is broad but concrete: strengthen nursing education, research and clinical learning, and prepare health-care leaders for changing needs in British Columbia and beyond. The donors’ own alumni relationship is part of the story’s logic of return.

What follows

The announcement is a commitment, not evidence that future outcomes have already been achieved. Its significance will be measured later in facilities, learning and care.
